The Pioneers Co-Op and Rusha & Co.'s 999 Dollar Store is a production in South-Central LA. It leans into the visual vernacular of the surrounding mom-and-pop storefronts: the hand-painted signs, the ad-hoc bricolage, the joyful collisions of color and typography that define everyday commercial life. By adopting the 99¢ store motif, we transform discounting into a neighborhood-specific performance, a comedic and joyful twist on both informal and formal design aesthetics. We presented works from my personal collection at a uniform $999 price point, turning what started as a storage clean-out into a strategic liquidation, and a softly irreverent commentary on value, circulation, and the improvisational economies that shape the area.
